I would like to ask other members what it is like to be in a romantic relationship with another aspie since I have never had luck in establishing romance with men without ASDs and will not consider them again for romance.

Recently several of my work colleagues have suggested that I try establishing romance with another aspie. I did take their advice but I knew that coming across a man another aspie is rare. IContainMultitudes Well-Known Member V. P Member. I think that the main advantage of dating another Aspie as opposed to an NT is that an Aspie can relate to and understand personal problems much better. I think that's the only advantage, too. It's a big bonus though. Soup Well-Known Member. I'm an Aspie married to a HFA.

We've been together for 11 yrs. He's what NTs call a workaholic. That's his 'narrow area of interest'. Sometimes when he's at home, we're alone together. This is a hard concept to make people comprehend but its akin to small children engaged in parallel play: they're together but doing their own thing. We do some together stuff too such as travelling. The way to make it work with another Aspie is to find one with compatible quirks.

Much of what applies to Aspies in relationships applies to NTs as well. There are some Aspies who even make a relationship work with a NT something I never could've managed. Make no excuses, don't try to figure it out or work through it: just get away from this person.

The same goes for someone with substance abuse issues. gypsywillow Well-Known Member. I suspect my last boyfriend was an Aspie. He drove me crazy by refusing to make plans, he was hyperfocused on his special interests during our time together, and he was reclusive and acted weird about going out in public.

Other than all the ways he annoyed me, it was the best relationship I have ever had in some respects. We both had a love for nature and outdoors, so we would go out exploring a lot. We shared a special interest in technology, so we could geek out together. And the greatest feeling of all was that we respected the other's need for alone time even when we were together, we were alone together side by side in our own worlds. Once I figured out he wasn't going to complain about me reading while we were eating, I started appreciating all of the ways we complemented each other.

But social engagements were always awkward, so we wound up avoiding those. I think when I date an NT I'm more sociable, but there is nothing like being together and just existing quietly with an Aspie. And now I'm going grammar police my last sentence said "an" NT, but the website automatically changed it to Neurotypical and now my grammar isn't correct and that is bugging me.

Romantic relationships are a challenge to navigate for everyone. Think about it: Approximately one in 60 children have a diagnosis, with even more going through lives without one. If your potential partner is one of such people, read on to get some handy tips on dating them. Getting informed is the first step towards a successful relationship. If nothing else, they understand sets of unwritten rules that move it forward. A person with AS might face more difficulty in understanding the cues.

As such, people with the condition tend to experience challenges in social interactions. Other symptoms include:. On the contrary, they tend to have high IQs — all they lack is the empathy of neurotypical people. The main challenge for people with AS on the dating scene comes from the arbitrariness of dating rules. Any dating rules they learn come from explicit explanations from friends.

Listening to constructive feedback can lead to rewarding relationships. They only need more time. The first step — finding somebody to date — is also the most challenging one. People are creatures of habit, and those with AS even more so. They will often find partners in their social circles and hesitate to exit their comfort zones. The best way to meet somebody with AS is through the people they trust. Friends and family offer a lot of support and information, which encourages them to start dating.

Chatting leaves a lot more time to think of what to say and feels less awkward. Both the act of asking out a person and the very first date are nerve-wracking. Being direct about it and offering a date idea right away can help both sides of the couple.

When it comes to the place, go for one that feels safe and comfortable. Relationships, in general, require people getting to know one another for it to work.

Plus, you and your partner will need time to develop an open line of communication. Being frank about who you are and your needs upfront helps you avoid a lot of misunderstandings and conflicts in this type of relationship. Both sides should make an effort to listen and understand. While it feels uncomfortable and awkward when other people interfere with your relationship, getting some dating tips from your friends and family can mean a lot. If you find it too embarrassing to ask for tips directly, find an online community.

Luckily, keeping a relationship with a partner on the autism spectrum is not very different from doing the same with a neurotypical partner. So, let your relationship follow a predictable structure that allows your partner to dedicate enough energy to you. You could even create a calendar together and enter tasks and events related to dating into it. People with AS sometimes come off as cold and blatant. Try not to get offended. However, people on the spectrum tend to come with particular personalities.

From their type come the most prominent advantages of dating a person with the syndrome too. This disorder makes them endlessly curious. This positive outlook on life feels pleasant for your average person. Most people with this condition have a sturdy set of beliefs they use to keep them grounded. Most prominent include the following. Often, the syndrome comes with feelings of anxiety , which makes it difficult for those with it to deal with choice.

Again, due to anxiety , people with AS are not very able to deal with unforeseen events and any changes to their usual routines. Many experience problems with the skills needed for developing relationships, but many adults end up in intimate romantic relationships and, ultimately, have a life-long partner. People on the autism spectrum do have feelings. Some even experience emotions more intensely than neurotypical people.

Many find it challenging to identify and discuss them, though. Still, considering they do feel the same way as neurotypical people, they definitely can fall in love. Every case is different, but, in general, this statement is untrue. These people have romantic emotions, as does everyone else.

They tend to show a desire to get involved in lasting relationships. A person on the autism spectrum goes through a meltdown when they temporarily lose control because of their emotional responses to various environmental factors.

Most often, no specific thing causes a collapse but triggers gradually build up until a person gets too overwhelmed. However, it will require that you put in the effort to understand them. With patience, dedication, and communication, you can make it work and help the non-native learn the language of romance.
